Present a story book to a child and you will be amazed at the variety of stories they can create from the pictures. When children read, or are read too, they hear more than mere words. They move into the magical world of the Story Book becoming a character or identifying with the situation and story. Through the rhythm and rhyme found in many of these books, children experience the sounds of a languages. The repetition (for example, “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!”), allows children to join in by saying some of the words of the story, even before they are able to read. And through the partnership between the words on the page and the colourful pictures, children make meaning from what is being read to them and learn to enjoy stories. There is also that essential human quality of empathy. Story books help children to begin learning how to step into someone else’s shoes and to see life from a different perspective. So, story books may be entertaining and magical but actually they are absolutely essential.

Bied 'n storieboek vir 'n kind aan en jy sal verbaas wees oor die verskeidenheid verhale wat hulle uit die foto's kan skep. Wanneer kinders lees, of ook voor gelees word, hoor hulle meer as net woorde. Hulle beweeg in die 'magical' wêreld van die Storieboek en word 'n karakter of identifiseer hulle met die situasie en verhaal. Deur die ritme en rym wat in baie van hierdie boeke voorkom, ervaar kinders die klanke van 'n taal. Die herhaling (byvoorbeeld: "Ek sal uithaal en ek blaas en ek sal u huis afblaas!") Laat kinders toe om deel te neem deur die woorde van die verhaal te sê, nog voordat hulle in staat is om te lees . En deur die samewerking tussen die woorde op die bladsy en die kleurvolle prente maak kinders betekenis uit wat vir hulle gelees word en leer hulle om stories te geniet. Daar is ook daardie noodsaaklike menslike eienskap van empatie. Storieboeke help kinders om te begin leer hoe om in iemand anders se skoene te trap en om die lewe vanuit 'n ander perspektief te sien. Storieboeke kan dus vermaaklik en magies wees, maar dit is absoluut noodsaaklik.
